Survey Reveals Small Businesses are Putting Themselves at Unnecessary Risk

Files, records, emails, customer data, financials – gone. It would be practically impossible for a business to recover from that."

Fern continued; "Having a backup solution in place is a necessity, but like anything else it needs to be maintained if it's going to be effective. Backups need to run regularly – at least once a day – and need to be checked and restored to ensure everything is functioning correctly."

The survey went on to expose the fact that 30% of those surveyed did not know how long it would take to get their business back up and running if their premises were destroyed, highlighting that business continuity planning is not a priority for many people.

Fern added; "A business continuity plan needn't be all singing all dancing, but business owners should have some basic idea of what they would do if their offices became unusable. It's something we don't like to think about, but fire, flood, theft and equipment failure do all happen and it is a business owner's responsibility to put a plan of action together outlining what they would do in the event of such a disaster. Aspects such as alternative premises, telecom and broadband connectivity, hardware replacement and of course, data recovery, should all be considered.

"Although it is comforting to see that most businesses are taking data backup seriously, the number of companies running without backup is extremely worrying. These businesses are like ticking time bombs. We would advise any firm without backup to speak to their IT provider immediately about secure offline backup – the most reliable and effective way to secure your data. IT security and data protection firm Sophos has questioned these claims following a press release issued by the website, claiming that a "Shrek" virus made it possible for "30,000 'ugly' people" to join the site, without going through the usual attractiveness approval process.

Greg Hodge, MD of BeautifulPeople said the following in the press release:

"We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting."

In our opinion you should start with categorizing your firm as upper mid-market, or smaller organization. If you do not think that you can classify your company as upper mid-market, then there should be serious consideration of the available budget, as AX typically requires custom settings and even programming to be implemented. Think also from the stand point of number of users – do you expect to have more than twenty five? If Yes, then you are probably on the right track. If you are committed to Microsoft platform, think about special offer for your industry. AX is recommended in process manufacturing, distribution, supply chain management, service organization. New version 2012 is also recommended for public sector (where there is the need to implement fund accounting). Let's take a look at some details:

1. Process Manufacturing. If this is the only objective, you may create new forms without coding and enable them in Windows interface (fat client), or even publish to the Enterprise Portal (so-called thin or in other words web user interface). Plus, custom query could be a base for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Server (SSRS) custom report (this could be done in MS Visual Studio, where metadata is exposed). And finally such custom query could be enveloped into SOAP Web Service interface (without coding, directly in MorphX). As the excurse to the history – MorphX was and is Axapta Integrated Development Environment with its own programming language X++. If your custom forms or tables need to be supported with some programming, we recommend X++ as natural choice. Of course, there are some possibilities to do Axapta programming directly in Microsoft Visual Studio in C# or VB.Net. We are leaving this to programming enthusiasts. The reason to be a bit conservative – such constructions as MorphX with X++ are more stable and you may expect them to stay in the future, while exposure in VS might see numerous transformations (deprecated methods, new background technologies, such as ADO.Net, etc.)

6. If you are expanding internationally. Traditionally we hear from our GP customers, could we implement it in China, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan, Siberia. Technically it is possible, but Great Plains is not localized and even translated to Chinese, Russian, it is only offered in English, French Canadian, Latin American Spanish, Arabic. Axapta on the other hand originated in Europe (Daamgard Software in Denmark back in earlier 1990th, later on acquired by Navision Software), it supports Unicode characters (required for hieroglyph based alphabets, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean). 2010 saw the emergence in the Argentinian market of tablet notebooks, spearheaded by Apple's iPad. Local companies are also planning to enter the tablet market. Fravega has said that it plans to start producing tablet computers at its plant in Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, as of Q211. Fravega was targeting sales of around 275,000 nationally this year.

A major area of opportunity for IT services vendors will be public and private sector organisation demand for help to utilise cloud computing solutions. They use (in simple terms) a "skin" of the banking site that leaves its links to real images and other content intact, and just change the location where the login box sends its content. They also go phishing for all kinds of logins these days, not just banking sites.

Financial institutions that manage billions of dollars tend to not send out emails with subject-verb agreement issues or misspellings of simple, common words.
